As we wait for Vaults at the World Championships 2013

In recent years, vault has been one of the best chances at a medal for countries outside of the Big 4 - USA, Russia, Romania, and China. However, the Big 4 has caught on and will return to the World Championships with more athletes competing 2 vaults. Afansyeva is an addition to Paseka for Russia, and Alla Sosnitskaya is waiting in the wings. Olympic Champion Sandra Izbasa is now joined by teammate Larisa Iordache. There are multiple Americans training 2 vaults alongside silver medalist McKayla Maroney. This includes Simone Biles, Elizabeth Price, Lexie Priessman, and Mykayla Skinner. While we haven't seen Priessman and Price's second vaults, Skinner proves to be competitive with the high difficulty combination of an Amanar and a Cheng. It will be interesting to see who makes the Worlds team and who continues to train 2 vaults throughout the quadrennium since it takes valuable time from training on the other events - most important for strong all-arounders like Larisa Iordache.

Here's a list of the vaulters with a chance of making finals at the 2013 World Championships. For those who have mocked vault finals previously, this is shaping up to be a very competitive final!

The list includes the highest start value the athlete has competed. * indicates these vaults have not been competed this year.

The list was compiled with help of Uncle Tim's UTRS as well as Arabian Puch Front

FIG Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy Level 1

Greece hosted a Level 1 Academy for Rhythmic Gymnastics in the capital city of Athens on August 4 – 11, 2013. It was the first time that Greece had hosted an FIG Academy and makes it the 51st federation to do so. This Academy began on the same day that a Foundations Course for Gymnastics for All finished in Barbados.

Twenty-two coaches attended this Academy from five different federations – Bulgaria, Croatia, Spain, Greece and Philippines.
The course leader for this Rhythmic Academy was Dr. Nota Klentrou of Canada who is a professor of physiology and was a member of the working group that developed the three-level Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy curriculum. The technical experts were Nadya Aleksandrova of Great Britain who is also a member of the Academy Working Group and former Bulgarian and British National Coach and the most frequent rhythmic Academy expert; and Helena Diaz of Portugal who earned the FIG coaching brevet last year. They were joined by music and Rhythmic Gymnastics expert Lasse Nettum of Norway. He also led a meeting with the experts before the academy began to develop new lectures related to music and artistry for this and future Academies.

The candidates performed well and all achieved good examination results on the three-part technical and theoretical examination. The highest result of 91% overall was achieved by Charikleia Pantazi of Greece who was one of the two former Olympians that attended the course. She was followed closely by Evangelia Gountroumpi also of Greece and Monica Fornier Garcia of Spain.

We thank the Greek Gymnastics Federation for its willingness to host this Academy in an excellent facility and with wonderful and highly skilled demonstrators.

This was the 146th FIG Academy and the 22nd for Rhythmic Gymnastics and brings the total number of different Rhythmic Gymnastics coaches to have attended an Academy to 270 and from 50 different federations.

Berth - Goodbye Gymnastics

The most decorated gymnast in British history, Beth Tweddle, announced her retirement. With an Olympic bronze, three world titles and several medals Tweddle European farewell to the gym. With already 28 years old, always be remembered for her country place on top of the gym.
Beth began her career as a complete gymnast, ie competing the All Around. Something happened to the global 2007. For the Beijing Games decided to specialize in Floor and Uneven Bars  (best event) and never got great difficulty in Vault and was a bit inconsistent in the balance beam.
Everyone remembered as in 2008 she came within one step of the podium , and as in the Olympics managed to take home her long awaited medal.
Power, difficulty and elegance could define this gymnast, but what made it so dear Beth was her great perseverance. She continued until she achieved her dream, an Olympic medal.

Chinese wins Acro group

Rockin’ final night of Trampo & Acro at World Games in Cali. …
The most remarkable ovation/encore/they-brought-the-house-DOWN in any gymnastics event I’ve ever seen was for the Chinese men’s Acro group. There were flairs, Great Big Throws, and they nailed Everything!
The audience were on their feet before the final pose. … They did an encore on the tumbling run where they jump- roped their boy flyer AND threw him in a quintuple corkscrew AND caught him. Then, in the kiss ‘n cry, the arena did the Wave THREE times around! It was awesome!
