Vera
Caslavska will make a
public appearance at the Acapulco Open gymnastics meet in Mexico.
This is an exciting little meet, which will feature international talents such
as Anna Dementyeva of Russia, Brenna Dowell of the US and Georgia Rose Brown of
Australia and hometown girl Ana Lago of Mexico.
Vera
was the most successful gymnast from the nation formerly known
as Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic). To date she is (and will
probably remain) the last gymnast to win two consecutive Olympic all-around
titles. She achieved this in Tokyo in 1964 and in Mexico in 1968.
Caslavska was a three-time Olympian who won eleven medals- seven of them gold-
making her the gymnast with the most individual Olympic titles in history.
Vera became a gymnast much beloved by the crowds in Mexico both
for her performance to regional music “Jarabe Tapatío” during the floor
exercise, and also for choosing the Mexico City Cathedral to wed runner Josef Odlozil. She formed such a strong bond
with the Mexican people that when she married Josef Odlozil, she was dubbed the
‘Bride of Mexico’.
Vera continues to live in the Prague, the city where she was
born on May 3rd 1942. She rarely makes public
appearances but she will travel to Mexico as a VIP guest of the Second Mexican
Open in 10 days time.
Mexico
Loves You!
